Recognized by its historic red iron lighthouse rising above the turquoise waters, Sand Key Reef is one of the most popular destinations for Key West diving and snorkeling. Located about seven miles southwest of Key West, this protected reef is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Sand Key Sanctuary Preservation Area. The reef features an impressive spur-and-groove coral formation, where colorful coral ridges are separated by sandy channels that create an exciting underwater playground for both snorkelers and scuba divers.

Sand Key in Key West offers something for every experience level. The shallow reef is ideal for snorkeling among tropical fish, sea fans, and vibrant coral gardens, while the deeper southern ledges provide outstanding scuba diving opportunities in depths ranging from about 40 to 65 feet.
